Measuring Foam Height Retention is a Severe Physical Test

Height retention in fiberfill is known as loft, or the cushioning material's ability to retain fill height after slight compression. But, for foam, height retention measurement involves a much more severe test. In testing flexible foam, conditions that contribute to cushion height loss or "set" exaggerated. The compression set test involves subjecting a foam sample to either 75% or 90% compression for 22-hours. Height recovery is then measured. While most fiber cushioning materials experience extreme height loss from compacting under such conditions, quality polyurethane foam products are capable of recovering at least 90% of original height.
